Classes are organized by levels to assure a continuum of education for our students. We have structured our curriculum to support students in developing a sustainable yoga practice through continual training in principles of structural integrity, dynamic action, and developing self-connection. Our momentum is toward culturing in the students a gradual, inspired turn toward the profound nature of our existence. It is our belief that the potency of yoga as taught from tradition makes the seemingly impossible elements of experience possible, that there is much more to us than we can comprehend. The tradition describes that through an uninterrupted, long-term practice with devotion, we become firmly grounded in yoga, and our aim is to enkindle that possibility.
A one month course in the foundational principles of yoga for people who are new to yoga or anyone who wishes to learn. Class meets twice a week to begin the process of developing a regularity and rhythm of practice. The course will build slowly and methodically to prepare students to continue on to general classes. Standing poses, forward-extensions, twistings, back-extensions, and inversions will all be introduced with integrity. Please register with the gusto to see the course through, as it is progressive in nature.
NOTE:
1) Please be respectful of the teacher by listening carefully and applying yourself fully to what they're teachin, regardless of your prior yoga background.
2) Please be clean (showered), and with clean clothes. A mild deodorant is okay, but keep scents to a minimum, as some of the students are very sensitive.
3) Be on time. It is respectful of everyone's time and effort.
4) Leave the studio at least as nice as you found it, put away props neatly in their chosen place.
5) Learn to feel more, let the content of class become fuel for looking in...
The breakdown of classes looks like this:
9:15-10:45am, Level II-III and Advanced (9:15-11:15am with Eddie Modestini) classes are a great aid to the student on multiple levels. The work in the Level II-III classes is taught for students & teachers who are committed to this practice. Please have a regular practice to come to these classes. Standing poses, various forward and back-extensions, Salamba Sirsasana and Salamba Sarvangasana/variations will all be taught regularly with time. Pranayama will be introduced periodically.
9:15-10:45am Astanga/Vinyasa classes are dynamic, warming classes that improve circulation to the entire body, build strength and flexibility, and work intimately with the breathing cycle of the students. Specifically, the 9:15-10:45am timeslots are designed for students and teachers with a regular yoga practice. They are very challenging and demand a solid level of foundational understanding in standing pose alignment, inversions, forward and back-extensions as these classes move through sequences of postures linked intimately with steady breathing. These classes are vigorous and fluid, and help students to develop coordination. Please come to this class if you have a consistent yoga practice, the vinyasa class is challenging.
11:30-1pm, Level I classes are designed and sequenced for beginning students and students interested in working on foundational principles. It is recommended to spend atleast 1 year in Level I classes before going onward. The content builds new students from the ground up, with specific attention on developing safely, learning foundational principles of alignment, and learning tools for a well-rounded home practice. These classes are where people get devoted to learning, as the initial benefits are felt readily.
6-7:30pm, Level I-II classes are designed and sequenced for students who have developed a base in Level I classes. It is recommeded to spend a minimum of 1 year in Level I-II classes before going onward. There is a progression into the next layers of yoga. Students with a background in standing poses, basic forward and back-extensions, twistings, and the ability to do Salamba Sarvangasana are in good hands here.
